Quote of the Week #7

We have begun learning about how the American colonists were able to make new homes in a new land. Consider the following quote:

"Home is not where you live, but where they understand you."
-Christian Morgenstern

Expectations: After you have read the above quote carefully and thoughtfully, respond to it using the following prompts. In an organized paragraph, answer these questions:

1. What do you think the quote means? Use your own words to paraphrase it.
2. Do you agree with the quote? Please explain why or why not.
3. Make a connection between the quote and real life.
- If you agree with the quote, give an example of when you have seen it to be true in your life, another's person's life, or for a character in a book.
- If you disagree with the quote, give an example of when you have seen it to be disproved in your life, another's person's life, or for a character in a book.

Remember that your paragraph needs to include an introduction sentence and a conclusion sentence.

  1. I think this quote is really true, because a lot of times people will buy a house and say “this doesn’t feel like home”. This means that they think it’s the home that they don’t like but it’s really the neighbors, or the surrounding people. This is an example of what I think Christian Morgenstern is saying with this quote.
Yes, I agree with the quote because this has happened to me, but not necessarily dealing with home. I really like baseball and I play a lot of it, so I went to this baseball tryout, and I made the team. I was glad that I had made it, but I didn’t really like the coaches, and the kids on it made me feel “not at home”. On a baseball team you’re with the kids a lot, so since I didn’t like them I didn’t want to be on the team, and have to be around them every day. This is the first time that I have heard this quote. But I think that everyone already has the quote in them, or has it in a different form. I think this is really common quote because we practically use it every day to make decisions. I think Christian Morgenstern did a good job putting this feeling into words so the people that don’t know about it, know about it for the future.

  2. I think the quote means that a real home is where people know you and understand you inside and out. The word home has nothing to do with structure you live in. Home means wherever you are that people care about, respect and understand you for who you are, not what you can do for or give to them. My mom always tells me that a house is a place to store your things, but a home is where you keep your heart.

I agree with the quote because it is not about what you have or own. (An example is if one person has a hut for a house and another person has a mansion, that doesn't matter because what matters is how you are and who you are surrounded by wherever you are.)

A real life example that I have is that my friends and family are more important to me than anything I have. Your items will not always be by you but your friends and family will always be by your side.

  3. I think that this quote means that if you are looking for a new home or a new apartment, you say this is not home or this is home. When you are home it feels like everything is just right the way it is and nothing is out of position. But if it's not at home, it could be the location of your home, the neighbors, or you just don't like the home. But I think this person is trying to say is that the person usually doesn't like the neighbors because they don't understand a whole lot. I agree with this quote because when your at home, you suddenly feel a surge of happiness and when your not at home, you feel left out and don't really know what to do. I like basketball a lot and I'm really good at it, but when I made a team I just lost my touch and couldn't play my game. So when it comes to gametime I don't get to play a lot because I can't play my game, others might think because I haven't played in a while, but I think it's because I'm not at home. Another reason is because when I was on a different team, I was the top scorer in almost every game, and that's when I thought I was offically, at home.

  4. I think that the quote means that if your home is not your home unless you are comfortable. If you move from Ohio to Texas and you were born in Ohio and all of your friends are in Ohio then that will always be your home. Your home is where your friends that you have known since you were a baby are and stuff like that. People always have a home town. If you live in Montana but you were born in Atlanta then Atlanta is your home town. You may have one personality before you move and another after you move but your true self, your true home, will always remain in where you feel is home. I love my house, I only remember without watching videos, living in this house. My house is homey and warm and thats what I love about it. I kind of agree with the quote. I Agree with the quote because you will always feel at home when you are at where you grew up. I also disagree with this quote because people may feel at home when they move to their new house. For me I follow that quote. I think it depends on what you feel. In real life I have seen someone really feel themselves and comfortable with their first friends, in their home town, in their first home. When someone moves, it just doesn't feel the same. It feels like a piece of you is missing;like a piece of your home town is missing. Another reason is in basketball there is one team who only plays well at their home gym. We beat the team by 15 when they played at our gym and when we played at their gym we only won by 7. I think that when you think about your home town you feel something special, and thats why this quote makes sense and (to me) is true.

  5. I think that the quote means that your home is not only a place for shelter or to live in but it holds all of your culture and religion and that is how everyone understands and knows you. Home is not where you live but where people know, understand and appreciate you for who you are. If no one appreciated you, you would feel bad and not wanted.
I agree with the quote because everyone has their own religion and sometimes, that is how people understand you. It doesn’t matter if you live in a tent or a mud house. It only matters about who you are. If I lived in a bad neighborhood and no one has the same culture then I wouldn’t feel at home anymore. It is not your home unless you feel like home and you feel comfortable. Many times, people move because they don’t feel at home. When I go to Mexico on vacation, it is not my home and I do not live there and I don’t feel at home. It is because there are different people there that I don’t know and at home, my friends and family are there.
An example is that I am part Chinese and my family can understand and know me unlike other people can. For example, since I am a Chinese American, I can enjoy both worlds. I can speak a language that other people don’t speak. I can also eat Chinese food. There are so many things how my family can understand me.

  8. I think the quote means that your home is not only a place for shelter but home is the community or neighborhood that you live in. The community includes your neighbors, local school teachers, school friends, business owners, and many others who work and live in the community.
I agree with the quote because people who live in your community share many interests, backgrounds, and life’s goals in common. All of the people who live in this community will know and understand who you are. These people are your teachers, friends and neighbors, police men, business owners, etc. Home is not where you live but where people know, understand and appreciate you for who you are. Being around people who know, understand and appreciate you is why you feel comfortable and safe. This is how you want your home to be.
We moved to Sammamish because we love the beauty of the environment and the great education that the schools provide. I believe most of the people who live in my neighborhood moved here because of the same reasons. People who live in my neighborhood will understand me because we share similar interests, goals in life and backgrounds.
For example, I cannot call Taiwan home even though I am Chinese and my parents were born in Taiwan. People in Taiwan may not understand me because we do not share the same culture, beliefs, and interests. Because of this, I will feel like a stranger and not feel comfortable and safe like living at home.

  9. l think that this quote means that home is not only place where people live or sleep. It is much more than that. Home is a place where you are happy and have friends and family who understand you. Home can change, too. I used to live in California, and that was my home. I had lived there all my life, and I had lots of friends. I was happy there. When I moved here in first grade, I didn’t have as many friends at first. Eventually, though, I did make friends, and now this is my home. This is because I feel content and comfortable. I am happy to live in Sammamish. Now, I am glad I moved. People understand me here. I am truly at home. That is what I think the quote means.
I agree with this quote. This is because a home is not necessarily a house, it is much more. When I moved here, nobody knew me and so, they didn’t understand me. My parents bought a lovely house but it did not feel like home right away. My home was in the small town of Benicia, California. I had friends there and I wasn’t very happy about leaving them behind. Now that I have lived here for five years, I have made some good friends. I am really happy that they are there for me and help complete what I think of as “home” which is now Sammamish.

  10. I think that what this quote means is even if you live in one town, the people might not understand you and you won't feel happy. When they don't understand you, you can't connect with them. That would not be very fun for you, so it would be hard to call that place your home. Home does not have to be where you live, home is that special place where you can be happy and where people understand you. I agree with the quote because to be happy in your home, you need to be able to understand the people and have them understand you. You need to be happy. I have a connection to this quote. I used to live in Ohio, and now I live in Washington. In both places I have met new people and made new friends. Those friends and my family understand me.I have been able to call both of these places home.

  11. I think this quote means that home isn't just a place where you live, it means that you understand things around you and people understand you. Home is a place that you are happy with.

I agree with this quote because it really doesn't matter where you live or what you live in, as long as you can understand your surroundings and people understand you. If you live in a neighborhood that you don't feel comfortable with, then that's not home to you. Everyone has a "home" somewhere in the world.

My connection with this quote is when I used to live in Laguna Niguel, California. That memory is very faint now. That used to be my home when I was born and now Sammamish is my home. Even though I live in Sammamish, I like being in California because of the weather. But now that I live in Sammamish, I feel more comfortable here because I have a lot of good friends here now. I still miss being in California but I'm more used to the weather here than California. My mom lived in California most of her life so she's used to sunny weather. Since I moved here, I enjoy the rain, hail, snow, and wind. So it really doesn't matter where you live, as long as you're happy with it.

In my mom's case, she's still not used to WA weather and she still thinks California as "home", but because she's settled here with us kids and my dad, she thinks Sammamish as home too. My dad experienced the same thing too and it happened to him three times. He was born in Taiwan, then moved to Canada, and then moved to California. When he moved from Canada, he felt like he belonged in Canada instead.
Though I miss California, I still think of Sammamish as "home".

  12. I think the quote "Home is not where you live, but where they understand you" means that home is where you are loved by many. It doesn't matter where you live but who you are with and the people that care about you.

I agree with the quote because I saw a movie called 2012 where their home was destroyed and wherever they went they called it home because they were together. Wherever they went disasters happened like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tidal waves but they all stuck together because they loved each other and protected each other. The family all understood each other. Even though their home was destroyed and they felt sad they had to keep surviving. Their home was being together.

I have lived in more than one home but it isn't the home that makes it home it is the family that lives there. My family loves each other and understands each other so wherever we go it is home. If we move to another house, go on a trip, camping or a hotel since we are together we are always home.

  13. I think the quote means that any place you can call home but it isnt truly home without people who understand you like a family member or your friend or just someone you can trust.

I do agree with the quote beause if you go on a vacation you can call that home but it would be a whole lot better with a friend or family member with you.

A connection in real life is when I go to a place it is a lot more fun to hang out with a friend or family member then to be by yourself.

  14. I think this quote means that not were you live is home it is where you think you fit in best. yes I agree with this quote because it's not about the house it's about who you really care about. one example that I can think of is a famly from our church house burned down in February. Their son and dog were able to get out of the house without getting hurt. Now they are in temporary housing and very thankful that no one died. They are still a family where ever they live.

  15. I believe that this quote means that your home isn’t necessarily where you live. If you are abused where you live, than you may have trouble calling it your home. Your home should be where you feel happy and loved. I agree with this quote because a house isn’t a home without love. One example of this is in the Harry Potter books. Harry lives with his aunt and uncle, and they don’t love him. So, Harry’s home is Hogwarts, where the people love him and care for him. With no love, the place you live is not your home.

  16. I think that the quote means that your home is not just where you live, but the people who live there with you understand you. I agree with the quote because the people who live with you and yourself always have one thing in common, you are all family. No mater where you are, as long as you are with your family you are at home. 1 example of how I saw this quote in my life is when I moved here from Wisconsin in 4th grade. I had lived in Wisconsin for ten years and I had still referred to it a home when I lived in Washington. But later on I realized that as long as I was with my family, I was at home. Although I miss Wisconsin badly, I know that as long as I'm with my family, I belong wherever I am.

  17. I think this quote means that home is not where you live, it's where feel comfortable and happy. Lots of people move to new houses and it doesn't mean that is your home right when you walk in the door. I agree with this quote because I think I would feel the same way if I had to move. I really I like my house and where I live. If I had to move to another state I definitely wouldn't feel at home for a long time. I really think Christian Morgenstern has a point.

    -Christian Morgenstern
I think the quote means, home is where ever your family is. You could like someplace terrible and not want to live there, but if your family is with you it can be very...homey. I agree with the quote because home is where ever you live but it is also where you are understood. If you lived alone in an apartment, then I would think that one would refer to home as where their family is. I have a connection with the quote because I live with my family at my house in Seattle but I also have a home in Atlanta and Cincinnati, where my grandparents live and where my aunt and uncle live. I believe it is possible to have more than one home.

  19. I think the quote means you need to understand the people you live with and they need to understand you. I don’t agree with the quote because you do live in your house. However, I do agree with the quote because you need to love and understand the people you live. For example, my older brother, Peter, has some learning disabilities as well as social issues and with both come a lot of sadness for him. It is important that I understand his limitations and that I help and support him. In the same way he tries to understand me. By doing so we can respect and love each other for who we are and what we have to offer.

  20. Some quotes have a lots of meanings like this one that can apply with the people around you, the place where do you live, the work that you have or the activities that you do. I think the main meaning of this quote is that it does not matter where do you live. In a beautiful house, in a messy house, in a rainy place, in the country or a busy city. What matter is that you feel happy, safe, comfortable and loved. Also with people that support and understand you. Including friends, teachers, family and anyone who helps you through your life.

I agree to this quote because everybody's happiness is in any place if your heart is full of joy. But also I think you can be more lucky if you live in a place that you love. I would love to live in France because I think is a beautiful place and I love croissants. Also I would love to live in Italy because I have seen beautiful places in movies and pictures like Tuscan, Venice and Turin and I love Italian food.

I can make a connection to this quote when I started in the gymnastics team. It was a lot of training and the coaches were very demanding. But at the same time, the girls were very nice and the ones with more experience helped the beginners and I think the coaches are like everybody's mom. All this made me feel happy and comfy.

This quote made me think about people in Haiti, or Chile who after the earthquakes can still find joy and hope all in part because they have family and friends for sharing and helping.

  21. I think the quote means that your home is not just where you eat and sleep but it's were you live with family and were people understand you. I agree with the quote because when I have friends over they look around my house and room to understand who I am along with us talk to one another. One example I have is that when I lived in Oregon through kindergarden-2nd grade I had many friends then I moved to Washington. I still called the other house home but then after a why I found out the if I live with a family that cares and loves me I am at home. That is what I think of the quote of the week.

  22. Without homes you wouldn't be able to feel comfortable or safe or loved. That is why I am so thankful to have a home filled with people who love me and make me feel safe. I think this quote means that home isn't just where you live or where you go to after school or where your room is, your home is where your family is, even if you don't have a house, your home is where your family is. If you have two sides to your life or if you have two personalities, your home will always remain in what you feel your home is. I agree with this quote. I agree with this quote because my home is where I feel the best. I loved my old house in San Diego, CA but when we moved here, I still felt the same. I still felt like we were in the same house as we lived in, in San Diego. That is why I still feel comfortable here. All of my mom's side of the family lives here and that is also why I feel comfortable. I have family to support me and love me and make me feel safe. One example is in soccer when I played a team here, where I live, I won the game. It is like you have something special in you when you are where you live. But then when I played in a different city, our team lost. I believe that if you are in your home town or where you live, you feel the most comfortable out of all the other places you go to. That is why I am happy and thankful that I have a home. I think that if you remember that you have a home and have people that care about you, you will feel something special and that is why this quote is very important.

  23. "Home is not where you live, but where they understand you." Christian Morgenstern. I think this quote means that home is not only your house or where you live it is the people around you who are your home. Like home some people say they are home-sick, they don't really miss their home, they miss their family or the people they live with.

I agree and disagree with this quote. I disagree because home is where you live, sleep and stay, but, I agree with this quote because you family understands you the most and they are there to help you grow up and to listen to you or to your problems and help you understand how to work it or them out.

An example in my life is when my cousin and I went to an over night camp for six days she told me she was home sick but I had taken it as she missed here dad, mom, and brother. I thought this because our families were staying at my grandma and grandpa's beach and she was having a great time there hanging out and she really was never sad, depressed or in a gloomy mood. So, when wee were at camp she probably missed her family. In that case no one was there to understand her, which means help her figure out her problems and comfort her when she is sad. I agree truly with this quote.

  24. I think the quote means home is not really home until you understand your surroundings and get used to this new place. Home is where you feel safe and can always go. A home is somewhere where people that you love live. It is a place where you can relax. This is what home means to me but it is one thing to live there and it is another thing to understand it and that is what I think this quote means. Also you are yourself when you are a home and people see you as you when you are at home not as someone you might be trying to be somewhere else.

I do agree with this quote because i am myself at home and people see me that way at home. I live in a great house that I feel safe in and I know that it is always there for me when I need a place to go. I understand my surroundings and my neighbors and everything that came with my house and I think that important. Christian Morgenstern is spot on with this quote and I definitely agree with it.

I have seen what this quote looks like and my friend that just moved to Chicago doesn't feel at home and she doesn't feel safe. Just because she lives in that house doesn't mean it feels like home yet. Once she gets used to her surroundings, understand it and know that this is her home now i think it will feel like home to her more.

  25. Have you ever said your freind has a way better house than you? Well if you have then think again. It dosent matter what your home looks like it matters who is in it; like the people you love. "Home is not where you live, it is where they understand you", by Christian Morgenstern. This was the quote of the week. I belive in this quote because I had an old house and in my new house I'm the same person. I think the quote means that you should be in a house with people you love not be miserable in a cool house. That is what I think this historical quote means

What does this quote mean to me? I think it means it doesn’t matter where you live, but the people who understand you and who care about you. The people who will help you, who will be kind to you, and the people who will accept you for who you are. It doesn’t matter where you are, just who you’re surrounded by.

I do agree with this quote. People who understand you and care about you is the only thing that matters. No matter where you are, home will always be a place with people who understand you. In this quote, “Home is not where you live, but where they understand you. “They” is the people like your friends and family who help you.

I have seen this to be true in a book. It was called Piper Reed, Navy Brat. She moved to Florida, couldn’t find many friends, and didn’t’ belong. But in the end, she realized it didn’t matter where she lived. She had her family with her and she was happy. I also have seen this to be true in a movie. In 2012, the world was falling apart. In the end, the family got back together and they sailed around the world on a ship. Home was wherever they were together.

  27. I think this quote means that it doesn't matter what your house looks like, it just matters if that house is yours and who's in it. The people that you love. I agree with this quote because I don't care if my house is messy or super clean I just care who's in it. If my whole family's together, then I'm happy! I've actually heard this in a book. It was called Rules and it's about this girl, Catherine, who has a brother, David, with autism. She's embarrased when her friends come over and the place is super messy because of David's stuff and her friends told her that. But at the end of the day she realized it doesn't matter what your house looks like it just matters who's in it and she is glad to have a brother, mom and dad. She doesn't care what other people think. I'm just like that. I don't care what my house looks like, I care for the people I love.
