Native American Vocabulary

For this week’s blog assignment, you need to write a paragraph or two that includes ALL of the vocabulary words. You can use more than one word per sentence, but do NOT try to cram all the words into just a few sentences. The paragraphs must be clear, make sense, and use the vocabulary words correctly. See vocabulary study sheet for all words that must be included.

How Do I Look?

Imagine you live on a far away, remote Caribbean island 400 years ago. You are so curious to know what you look like, however, there are no mirrors, no glass, no cameras, no pencils. Think of three ways you might try to find out how you look. Remember to explain your thinking clearly in at least one complete paragraph.

Why Move?

Why Move?

This may seem like a simple question this week, but I want you to think deeply about the answer and provide an example. Talk to your parents or another adult about these questions before posting your reply. Stretch your thinking.

Why do people move?
Why do people leave home?

Please make sure your answer includes specific examples and is at least one paragraph long.

Heroes

We have read in Three Cups of Tea that one of Greg Mortenson's heroes is Mother Teresa because of how she used her life to serve those who were less fortunate than herself. Using this as an example, please answer the following questions:

- What is your definition of a hero?
- Based on your definition, who is one of your heroes?
- Describe the characteristics that make him/her your hero.

Current Events

Choose two cover story articles from Time for Kids. Read them carefully. Your homework this week is to summarize each article AND give your opinion about the topic. You may submit your summaries together as one post, OR you can submit them separately.

Make sure you include the article's title, author, and date published. See example in my post.

Helping Others

In the book, Three Cups of Tea, we have learned how Greg Mortenson helped the Balti people of Pakistan. These were people that were virtually strangers to him when he decided he was going to build them a school. Think of a time when you helped someone (someone you knew or not), and answer the following questions:

- Who was the person you helped?
- What did you do to help him/her?
- Why did you decide to help this person?
- What were the results of your help: how did the person feel? How did you feel?

THEN answer this questions: Do you think it is important to help others? Why or why not? Bonus: What could we as a class do to help someone else, or a group of someones?

Expectations: You are to write a clear, organized paragraph that answers the above questions. Please pay close attention to your spelling and conventions.
