Helping Others

In the book, Three Cups of Tea, we have learned how Greg Mortenson helped the Balti people of Pakistan. These were people that were virtually strangers to him when he decided he was going to build them a school. Think of a time when you helped someone (someone you knew or not), and answer the following questions:

- Who was the person you helped?
- What did you do to help him/her?
- Why did you decide to help this person?
- What were the results of your help: how did the person feel? How did you feel?

THEN answer this questions: Do you think it is important to help others? Why or why not? Bonus: What could we as a class do to help someone else, or a group of someones?

Expectations: You are to write a clear, organized paragraph that answers the above questions. Please pay close attention to your spelling and conventions.

  1. At times when my brother, Rahul, is feeling sad, I sometimes try to cheer him up. I tell jokes to try and make him laugh. I decide to help him because it affects my whole family when somebody is not happy. I think it is important to help one another because if you don't help someone you won't find friends easier than if you do. As a class we could pick up items people dropped. This just shows that you will always be there for another person when something bad happens and is inviting to the person you helped to be a good friend. These are just some of the ways we can help other people.

  2. I help my mom when my dad is out of town. I am the man of the house and I keep a watch on my mom and my sister. I take out the garbage, do the dishes and help my sister with her soccer. My dad asks for my help when he leaves town. When I keep a watch on my sister and mom they feel loved and I feel happy to help them.I think it is important to help others because if you do they will say thank you and I will feel like I did something good. As a class we could have a car wash and make enough money to give to another country that needs money to buy food.

  3. Every Christmas my family adopts a family in need. We buy their Christmas presents and give them to whoever is running the program they deliver them to the family.

We used to do this program at my old school every year and now my father’s work does a program very similar to the program at my old school. We decided to continue the tradition.

I do not know the people I buy presents for but, I am sure they were very excited and happy.

I think it is very important to help others because we often have more than we need and should give some to make others lives happier. Even if you just gather up your used toys and clothes and put them by the curb for the Charity trucks to pick up.

  4. Well of course I didn’t help the Balti people like Greg did, but I have helped out a lot of people and one person is my grandma. She broke her wrist while playing golf and I helped her by carrying around her purse, shopping bags, and grocery bags. I also helped her by setting the table and cooking. I decided to help my grandma because I felt bad for her. I made my grandma feel really good and I made myself feel great. I think it is very important to help others to make them feel good. This summer, I went to help feed the homeless. We bought the food, cooked it, and served it. My family did it not to make us feel good but to make sure the homeless knew how much we cared for them. We could do this same thing as a class.

  6. Whenever my mom starts to cry, I always try to cheer her up like hugging her and telling her to relax. I would ask her what's wrong and comfort her. I help out my mom because this is my mom, I don't want to see her like this! I'd help my family members when they're hurt or sad.

Every time this happens, my mom will usaully calm down in a hour or so. After I help my mom with calming down, I start to cry (it depends what my mom is crying about) and my mom will do the same thing what I did for her.

I think helping people is important because if we help out other people, maybe THEY will do the same for other people.

  7. 2 years ago, my family adopted 2 kids through World Vision. Puthumusa is 10 years old, just like me. He is from Africa. And Le Thi Thuong is 8 years old, same as my sister. She is from Vietnam. We help these children by donating money monthly. We also celebrate their birthdays by sending extra money for them to buy something they like. I decided to help them because I saw that Le Thi Thuong had no parents and Puthumusa's parents couldn't afford to provide the basic needs for him such as tooth brushes, running water, and a pair of sneakers. He couldn't even go to school. The results of helping both children are that they are now able to go to school, have clean and healthier teeth, and they are able to run around with a new pairs of sneakers. They now know how to read and write and they write letters to us once in a while. I have learned a lot through caring for them. I have learned to appreciate what I have and to always have a thankful heart. :)

  8. I helped my neighbor because she was going away and needed someone to babysit their cat so I did it. I did it because I love cats and helping people.she was happy because she had no one else to do it and I was happy to because I like to help people.

  9. I am so inspired by what you all have written so far! It makes me so proud to know that I have students who care so much for their families, but also for people they have not even met.

I like what #7 said about having a "thankful heart." We really are so blessed with what we have, but I don't think we realize how much we have until we see how little other people have.

I also think that #25 makes a very good point about what could happen if we help another person. Maybe doing one kind deed will inspire even more kind deeds!

Lucas - I'm wondering about the second part of the blog question. Do you think it is important to help people? Why or why not?

  10. When Vinnie, My brother, needs help I like to help him. One of my favorite things to help him with is football. Last year Vinnie broke his arm and had to skip the whole football season so this is his first year of football. One day Vinnie and I went into the front yard and I pretended to be his coach. I passed the football with him and helped him punt the ball. I decided to help Vinnie with this because he was behinde in fotball and I wanted him to catch up. Family always comes first with me and helping my brother makes me feel good. In return Vinnie practices basketball with me. Vinnie feels good because he likes to be able to do the things the boys on his fotball team do. Vinnie is trying to become qaurter back in a few years. I felt good because I get to know that I helped someone. I also felt good because I got to bond with my brother.

I think it is important to help each other out because when we think about how little some people have we think about help, then we think about how lucky we are and how grateful we should be.

I think are class can help out someone together by doing fundraisers. We could also do something where each person in our class is in charge of a piece of supplies and brings it in and then we can send it to pakistan. I think we could also make cards for people because just knowing that someone cares sure feels a lot better. I think that we can make a change and once we do we will feel really good.

  12. I was walking home from school and I saw this little boy playing around. After he was done playing he went looking for his mom and couldn't find her. So I helped him look for her. The reason I helped him is because when I was little and I went to Italy with my family. When we were walking I saw something cool and looked at it for a while. When I started to look for my family I couldn't find them and I remember how scared I was. This lady came and tried to help me, but I couldn't understand her.
I had found the boys mother and she thanked me for that and I had felt pretty good about myself that day.

  14. Sometimes I will help my brother Tanner with his chores. I help him just to be nice. Also, if I help him he might help me back, but sometimes he doesn't. The last time I helped my brother he helped me back. It made both us feel good. It is important to help others because it is a nice thing to do and a lot of people don't have very much. A good thing to do is do a fundraiser as a class or a food drive

  15. Sometimes I help my sister with things like, doing chores and sometimes she will help me. I help my sister because when I am done with my chores she won't be done so I help her finish them so we can get it done faster. We are like a team. When I am done helping my sister then we can go out and play so she thanks me and then we don't have any more chores that we have to do.

  17. I help my mom by babysitting my sisters when she goes to the store. I decide to help her because she does lots of things for me and I enjoy taking care of my sisters. After mom comes home I feel happy with myself because she always is so thankful. I think people feel happy after they do things for others because they see how happy the other person is.

  20. My mom and dad are from Mexico. Over there is a lot of poor people, some of them live in houses made of cardboard and many kids have to work to help their families so they can't go to the school.

Everytime we go to Mexico we help somebody with money or food. That had made me feel very good because I saw a smile on their faces and all of them had been very grateful. I remembered a very old man eating next to us, so my parents paid for his dinner. He said "Thank you, God bless you", and I think I'm blessed because I have food, clothing and shelter.

I think is important to help, because we can make a difference in somebody's life. As a group maybe we can help by making cards for kids who has cancer or making a fundraiser for them.

I really liked what number 7 did for the two kids.

  21. A time I helped a person was when I went to "Operation Sack Lunch" to feed the homeless as part of K-Kids. We helped the homeless by giving them toothpaste, pillows and blankets, and a meal. I participated because I wanted to give the people everyday needs just like we all have. The ending was nice, everybody was pretty happy. We all had smiles on our faces. I felt really good after helping the homeless.

  22. One of my teachers had cancer. Her husband was also very sick. She said that she felt all alone and was overwhelmed. So my family visited her a few times. We also helped weed her garden and we collected money for her from the class.

We chose to help her because she was having a rough time and we wanted to make her feel better. After we helped her she felt better and my family felt really good that we helped her.

I think people should help other people because it makes the other person feel like someone cares about them. As a class we could do pennies for peace or a food drive. I think it was good that we read Three Cups of Tea as a class because it makes people think about how much we have and what we can do for other people that don’t have as much as we have.

  23. What Greg did a great thing for the people of Pakistan is incredible. I wish I could do something like that too. My brothers friend moved to Arizona and when he got here they found out that Cooper had a type of cancer called Leukemia. We helped put together a organization called Coop's Climbers. Many family's climbed 75 flights of stairs in the Columbia Tower in Seattle to raise money to help find the cure of Leukemia. Everyone got a shirt for climbing those stairs. My family decided to help Cooper because was one of my brothers best friends and there family were family friends. Cooper thought that it was so cool to have that many people climbing in his name to help him and other people with Leukemia. For the last few years Cooper has been coming to Seattle and staying with us. He is doing really well! I think that it is important for us to help people because it is a very nice to do and I think if more people help each other out the world would be a much better place. One thing that our class could do is Pennies for Peace and I know that we did that last year but after reading about the people in Pakistan they need a lot more. I think everyone in class could say this but I really fell for them.

  24. Once, I went on a hike around Seattle for cub scouts, and we learned about Seattle and its history. On our hike, we were suppose to fill bags with items like bandages, socks, some food, toothbrushes, tooth paste, and other supplies. Then, we would give them to homeless the people we saw on our hike. I made about 20 bags, and past out every last one. I was surprised how many homeless people there were in Seattle. It felt very nice to help those people, and I would do it again if given the chance.

I love helping people, and I feel it is important that we help each other out. Helping is the base of teamwork, and teamwork is the best and most efficient way to work. Although more problems may appear, the final product that emerges from the group will be more robust than when a single person was to try and solve it. But before a group can even think of solving a problem, they must fist have the ability to agree, work together, and help each other.

A good idea for a project we could do to help people is to collect money in any way possible (pennies for peace, change for change, fundraisers, lemonade stands, etc.) and donate it to any organization to help people. That is a fun way to help our community and fell good about ourselves.

  25. I like how in Three cups of Tea, Greg helped the people build a school. On Sunday I helped clean up around the house and I helped cook. Cooking is one of my favorite things to do and we all like to cook dinner as a family. My mom said I was a big help. I decided to help her because she really needed it because she had a lot of stuff to do. It really made me feel good to do those things. I can't wait to help a lot again.

  26. I didn't build a school, a bridge, or have a company that builded schools for Asia, but I do love to help around the house and anywhere else. I help my mom and dad around the house by doing chores. I wash the dishes and wipe the table while my brother takes out the garbage and vacuums the house. I help them because I think it creates less work around the house and I always feel good when I do a task for someone. I wanted to help because someday, hopefully, they will return the favor when I need it. Last year my family donated money to a Vietnamese orphanage. We donated money to the orphanage because we thought it would help. The people who ran the orphanage could use the money to provide items for the orphans. I also felt good when we did it. When Greg Mortenson built a school for the children of Korphe, I knew they really appreciated it and I hope the people I helped had the same reaction.

  27. One time my brother was being bullied by several boys in our neighborhood so I went outside and asked them to stop. They laughed at me and I told them just because he has some challenges you need to understand that although he is different than you he has feelings and you are not being nice. All he is trying to do is make friends. After that they apologized and became his friend. This made my brother feel very happy and it made me feel great because we all became friends. I wanted to help my brother because I love him and I am sad when he is sad.

Yes, I believe it is important to help other people because if we did not help one another this world would be a cruel place to live. And when I help others it makes me feel great.

As a class we could collect money, food and clothing for the homeless and deliver it to a homeless shelter. It is always good to give to others when we have so much to be thankful for.

  30. Last Thursday at school I helped a 3rd grade girl find her class. She was in her class by herself when I walked by. She opened the door from inside the classroom when I was walking by. She said, "excuse me do you know where my class is?" Then I said "are they at P.E.?" Then she said "No". Then she started to cry. I asked her if she needed any help then she said "No, I'm find." Then I went back to my classroom. Then I dropped some things in the cafeteria. Then I asked a teacher if this is the 3rd grade kids? She said "Yes!" So I ran back to where the girl was. I saw her then I said "I know where your class is, they're at lunch." Then she ran into the cafeteria.

I decided to help her because I could tell that something was wrong. I felt really proud of myself after helping her find her class.

I believe that it is important to help others because it makes you feel good about yourself, and I know that I will need help sometime and I hope that someone will helped me.

Maybe we could visit another school and help them with problems they have in math, science, or reading.

  31. Last year we did a giving tree for a family in need. One thing I remember giving was a box of diapers to a family with a small child. I was surprised and kind of sad knowing that a family was too poor to afford diapers and had to ask for them as a Christmas present. I was also surprised because they did not ask for toys. I decided to help these people because I know how good it feels to get a present so I wanted to share the happyness. I felt happy after i delevered the supplies.I think it is important to help because there are so many people out there that can not afford food or shelter so we should help them.As a class I think we could collect gentily used books and send them to a school that does not have books. Another thing that we could do is collect quilts or blankets and give them to the homless durng this cold winter.I think it is more important for kids my age to do community service because people get caught up in there own life or sports and forget about the homeless or the people in need. When we all pull together and help we can make the world a better place.

  32. Someone who I help a lot is my brother, Austin. I try to help him with many things. There small things that will one day will add up. Some things I do are help him with sports, homework reading and video games. To many people playing video games is not going to make the earth a better place, but it means a lot to my brother if I play video games because I'm pretty good. It makes me feel good to help my brother and when I help him defeat a videogame he is always really nice and it makes feel even better.

I think it is important that you help the people because it makes the earth a better place to live, or as my mom says be part of the soulution, not the problem.

  33. Once I helped my sister when she was sick. What I did was the brother/sister's worse nightmare,

    I DID WHATEVER SHE SAID!

I did it becuase she helps me when I'm sick. I felt proud that I did what kids say is impossible. But the most important thing is I love my sister.

  35. Every Christmas at my church we take a tag off the giving tree and buy a gift for that person. We decided to help these people because the people we buy gifts don't have enough money to buy things for themselves. I don't know how these people felt but I expect they were happy. I think that it is important to help others because you are doing an act of kindness.
