Loyalist or Patriot?

PLEASE WAIT UNTIL WEDNESDAY TO POST YOUR ANSWER TO THIS BLOG ASSIGNMENT.

We have been learning about the events that led up to the Revolutionary War. We have also looked at these events through the eyes of the Loyalists and the Patriots of the 13 colonies. Imagine that you were one of the first American colonists. Would you have been a Loyalist or a Patriot? Please explain your answer with detailed support and at least one complete paragraph.

  1. I probably would have been a patriot because dome of the laws the british made for the colonists were ridiculous. Like closing Massachusttes's ports, they hurts everybody and helps no one. And the courtering act, if you are going to have solders stay in AMerica make them build their own homes or build the a hotel in each city. Also king George doesnt really know to run the colonists because he has never been where the colonials are living, how is he suppost to know whats what? I can see the side of being a loyalist but, personally, I wouls be a patriot.

  2. Back in colonial times, if I had to choose between being a loyalist or a patriot, I would rather be a patriot. This is because I don’t believe a foreign country should be able to control my country. The patriots stood up for themselves and their rights against England, one of the most powerful and major countries at that time. They didn’t want a foreign power telling them what to do so they decided to rebel against England.
Also, when I look at the Loyalist perspective, they always seem to be afraid of the king and parliament and they think that people who don’t believe in the king should be banished or punished. They don’t seem like people who would stand up for themselves. The loyalists seem like they don’t have any courage.
Finally, I would be a patriot because the laws that the British made for the colonists were very unfair and did not treat colonists with equality. Further, the British seemed surprised that the patriots were angry with them. One such example of unfair British laws was the Port Act where the British closed down Boston Harbor. This is a law that hurt loyalists or Britain more than the patriots because they lost their biggest trading post. This led to lack of supplies and food for all citizens, patriots and loyalists alike. I think that this law would have made some loyalists become patriots! I believe that the patriots are where I stand.

  3. If I had to choos between being a patriot or a loyalist, I would be a patriot. I would be a patriot because I am indipendant and I don't like other people doing things for me. I would probley not want the king to be in charge of me. I think being a loyalist would be easier though because if you agree with everything, you wouldn't mind paying taxes and donateing things because you would agree with the king and britain. I think it would make life way easier if you were a loyalist, but when you try to get away from something but it keeps following you, it gets annoying. That is probley how the patriots felt. It is like choosing if you want life to be followinng someone and easy, or wanting life to be independtant and hard.

  4. I would definetly be a patriot out of my two choices. I think it was right for them to fight back because they didn't deserve the laws the king was making for them to follow. The loyalists are scared, and are like remote controlled robots, and I personally don't think that is a good way to spend your life, but they were very positive. I mean in the "Courting Act" they had to give them a home, food, and transportation. That really isn't fair because you barely make enough money to feed, shelter, and get transportation for you, and your family, so why should you have to spend more on a person you don't even now? They made many more laws that made the patriots mad, but because the patriots were strong, stubborn, and fierce they stopped some of the laws. Even though I'm a positive person I think I clearly am a patriot whether anyone wants me to be one, or not!

  5. Back in the colonial times if I had to choose between a loyalist or a patriot I would defiantly be a patriot. The reason I think being a Patriot is better is because I don’t think it is right to be controlled by a country that you don’t live in any more. Most of the British sailed to America to get away from all of the laws and religions England had made, but now the English are making more laws against them. For instance the Proclamation of 1763, the English made a law that said the natives got all the land to the west of Appalachian Mountains, and the British could NOT move there.(The British won the land after the French/Indian War) The English took away the Patriots freedom and Britain had gained more control over their life’s. How would you feel if someone completely took over your life and started making all of these silly laws for you to follow like in the Intolerable Acts in 1774. The English punished the Patriots in Boston, for the Tea Act in 1773, by making many new laws. All of this explains how the English have treated the Patriots unfair but I think the Patriots should be free to do what they want. Also I can speak out for my rights and what I want so I think I would have been better off being a Patriot.

  6. If I had been in the American colonies I would have been a Patriot because if I was a Loyalist I would have been miserable that the soldiers took all of my stuff. In the Revolutionary War the Patriots grew stronger then they did in the Boston massacre because all of the Patriots joined forces to have their revenge. Another good thing about being a Patriot is that when the Patriots poured tea in the Boston harbor they got rid of taxes. Also I could have been a part in the Revolutionary War to teach the Loyalist soldiers the true meaning of suffering. I wish I could have been a Patriot so I could be a part of the Revolutionary War to be remembered.

  7. If I had to chose to be Loyalist or a Patriot, I would have chose to be a Patriot. I would have because the Loyalists only have certain Government leaders that could chose laws and ways of life like the King of England. While Patriots were democratic which means everyone had a say in laws and ways of life. As the Revolutionary War came to be the Patriots grew stronger by power and self-confidence. And if I were to live back then and even now I don't like people telling me what to do without my say like how the British made laws and tax without colonists say which is called taxation without representation. Also I could show the British there is a difference from fighting for freedom and your life then a King and to be forced to do. If I was to be a part of the Revolutionary War I would be a Patriot so I would be remembered as the country who won the Revolutionary War.

  9. If I was given the choice of being a loyalist or a patriot, I would have to be a patriot because I don't like other's ruling over me. Also, I wouldn't tolarate all the dumb rules and laws that the Loyalists made up, like the Quartering Act. I also don't like it that when the Loyalists made laws, not everyone has a say. If you are a Patriot, everyone gets a say when they make up rules. I honestly would not be able to tolarate being loyal to The King of England when he doesn't even know what is going on in America half the time.

  10. If I were a colonist I would be a patriot. I too would probably go berserk if they made those laws. The tea act. Well I actually like tea and if they just made tea available in that one spot, I would be angry. The Stamp act. I would not have paid those taxes on paper with print on them. Other too would make me mad. The Loyalist thought they were doing a good thing, but they were dead wrong. I think that it is really stupid of them to make laws without including the patriots. Half of the people there are patriots. I might not want to be either, but I DEFINATELY would not want to be a loyalist.

  11. If I were an American Colonist, I would have been a patriot because lives of the Patriots were miserable as a result of not fair laws and not democratic.
One reason is because many of the laws that England made were really unfair. For example, one of the laws were called the Tea Act. It was when the patriots boycott the British goods. England got mad and said that only their country could sell things to them. That made the patriots very mad because they could no longer drink tea because they did not want to buy any of the British goods.

Another example is that England was not very democratic. When they are making laws, England never asks anyone to help them decide on the new law. They just make a new law. Just like the Tea Act and many others. Many of these laws made the Patriots very mad and so they protested and protested. One of the most famous protests was when a man and some other people went aboard a ship and dumped over 90,000 lbs. of tea leaves.

Another reason why I would have rather been a patriot is because soon after the patriots boycott and protested against England, they soon got their way and the government had to repel the law on all of the unfair laws. Before that happened, the patriots were not treated evenly with the loyalists. Another law that England came up with before the revolutionary war was that no ships could leave or enter through the Massachusetts harbor. That was a very bad law because they could not import or export goods so many people lost their jobs. A really unfair law they had was that if and one committed a crime on either side, loyalist or patriot, they would have to take the court all the way to England where they will have a fair judge. This was because the loyalists were the exact opposite of the patriots. The loyalists always agreed with whatever England did and the patriots did not. That made the patriots lives not very peaceful. That is what caused revolutionary war.

As you can see, those are the reasons why I would choose to be a patriot. There are both good things and bad things but I would still choose to be a Patriot.

  12. If I were to choose between a patriot or a loyalist, I would be a patriot. I would choose this because I think that the laws that England made were not fair to them, and they never got to vote on it. For example, the Quartering Act required that you would have to give supplies to the soldiers. The patriots did not like this. Most of the laws that England made, it made the patriots angrier every time. Some of the laws that England made were repealed. Some patriots couldn't stand the laws. When the angry mob of patriots taunted the soldiers, shots were fired and the patriots called it the massacre. I think that the laws that England made were not fair at all.
Even though the Patriots were furious about the laws most of the time, I would still want to be a patriot.

  13. EASY! The question this week was, “If you were a colonist would you be a patriot or a loyalist?". If I was a colonialist a would choose to be a patriot no doubt. I think that all of the rules were bogus. I don't think you should have to pay an additional fee just for buying paper. You already have to pay the cost and the tax. You pay like double the original price in the end. The Tea act was also kind of weird. I would go to the colonies to get away from England! Now I have to buy my tea from them. Now do you see why I would be a patriot over a loyalist?

You should not have to pay an additional fee on printed paper. I wouldn't want to pay taxes on tea, something I would have drank everyday. Although I wouldn't want to pay the extra taxes and take care of soldiers, but I could also have been a Loyalist. I could be a Loyalist because the taxes were to help England get out of debt. The soldiers were protecting me, so I should give them housing and food. But, go back to the Patriots' point of view: there were to many taxes that we should not have to pay. When we became America, we did just what England did, we had more taxes. We added more taxes because we needed money, that's what got us mad at England. I am glad that we are our own country, but how would you feel if you just won a war to get away from taxes, but now you have more taxes?

    2. what's a loyalist:A person who remains loyal to the established ruler or government, esp. in the face of a revolt,or A colonist of the American revolutionary period who supported the British cause; a Tory.
WHAT'S A PATRIOT:A person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors. OR An automated surface-to-air missile system designed for early detection and interception of missiles or aircraft.:)

  16. Between being a patriot and a loyalist through those times, I would rather be a patriot because I know I'm independent and I would crazy if they made those ridiculous laws and just go with it. Closing all the ports of Massachusetts was ridiculous just because the patriots were boycotting for their rights of buying tea from different places with tax. It was very bad because you couldn't import or export any goods and a lot of people lost their jobs. It wasn't a good law at all. They weren't treated fair at times.

Another reason why I would be a patriots is because after all the boycotting and protests, they mostly got what they wanted. The government repealed some laws to because of all the fights. Sometimes days were good s=and others were bad but there were a LOT of fights.

These reasons are why I made these choices.

  17. If I were in Colonial times I would choose to be a Patriot. I would choose to be a Patriot because I think that it is unfair for the British to make laws with the Patriots having no say in it. I also think that the British were torturing the Patriots, because they have almost no say in what happens in the colony. When they had the Boston Tea Party, and they dumped 45 tons of tea into the ocean, I think that was a way of telling the British how they felt. I would also be mad if you were trying to boycott the British and then they made another law about how you had to buy tea from a certain company in Britain. I wouldn't want to have to pay extra money for printed paper. When the Patriots fought the British and Loyalists they almost always got their way. Many laws were repealed. After many battles, the Patriots could finally declare their independence and have rights that they didn't have before.

  18. Honestly, I would choose to be a loyalist. I’m not much of a leader. That’s why I would follow in the King’s orders. The king never really did treat the loyalists badly. I wouldn’t really mind paying taxes or following the king’s laws because I would know that he would be on my side. He wouldn’t harm fellows who worship him. #16 said the loyalists didn’t have any courage. That is probably true. The loyalists didn’t want to confront the king, they were scared and spine less. But events in the past happened mostly because of the patriots. The Boston Tea Party, and the Boston Massacre, and the Tea and Quartering Act all happened because of the patriots. They were boycotting against British Goods and being stubborn to buy their products. None of this would’ve ever happened if they decided to be loyal to the king. War started, and the loyalists and patriots began to despise each other. Other posts say they would be a patriot for sure. But did they also see the side of the loyalists?

Why I pick patriot because if I was a loyalist then I maybe be bossing the soilders. I pick patriots because I want to save my land and my country to live, fight, and courage to my soilders to help and beat the other countries. I might be one if the bravest and strongest patriots in the world.

  20. If I were a colonist, I would be a Patriot because the English were restricting the colonist's freedom. They were also creating laws and taxes when there was no colonial representation in Parliament, and most members of Parliament had never even seen American soil once in their lives. Next, some of Parliament’s laws were downright stupid! For Example, the Stamp Act of 1765 put an extra tax on all printed documents, (including playing cards!), or Tea Act of 1773 that said you could only buy tea from the British East India Co. And then there were the Intolerable Acts of 1773, which took away Massachusetts's freedom and shut down Boston Harbor (Which was horrible for the Loyalists, too). The English had no respect for the colonists and thought that they could do whatever they wanted to the Americans and they would do nothing in response. They were very wrong. The British mistreatment of the Americans soon created what would become the world's most powerful nation.

  22. Patroit or Loyalist?
I think I would be a patriot! I would want to be a patriot because I want to be my own person and not have to be controled by England! Another reason is I would not want to be part of those ridiculious rules that the patriots and loyalists had to follow. I know that England was trying to punish the patriots for the Boston Tea Party when they closed the Massachusetts Port but they were hurting the loyalists that lived in Massachusetts. Also I disagree with the rule about the English soliders staying with colonist. I would not want to let a stranger come and live in my house. Also I would not want to have to pay for all there needs. I disagree with mostly all for the rules England made. I would not want to be a loyalist because of that. These are reasons why if I were a colonist I would want to be a patriot!

  23. If I was an American colonist, I would be a patriot. I would be a patriot because then I can express my own opinion. If you are a loyalist, you don't get to say what you think, you have to go along with everything the king says. But being a patriot allows you to stand up for yourself and other people that are patriots too. Closing all of the ports of Massachusetts was very hard because you practically couldn't get any resources for food. That mad many colonists up set and angry. Being a loyalist in that situation would be hard because you can't do anything about it. But, being a patriot on the other side, would be better because you can protest and express your opinion to make a difference. This law was very unfair to all colonists to close the port, and you also couldn't import or export any goods which made many people lose their jobs. Last, I would be a patriot because after all of the horrible laws that were made, some of them got repealed and there wasn't as much war and fighting. That made many colonists lives (especially patriots lives) easier!

  25. If I had to choose to be a loyalist or a patriot I would definitely be a patriot. I would want to choose my own life rather than having the king run it for me. Just like the patriots, I would be steaming mad if the government made all these stupid laws that I had to follow even though I didn't have a say in them. I agree with the patriots for rebelling against these laws. I think they should have fought for what they thought and they did. I think that I would've been on the patriots side if I was alive in the 1700's.

  27. I would be a patriot because I DO NOT!! want the British government in charge of me. They don't even know what's going on here until about a month later and the laws that they make up are horrible. I mean for example the stamp act, going through a deck of cards to stamp each and every one of them it's ridiculous.
Would you like to have another member of the family? I wouldn't. One more to feed, one more chair at the table, a person you don't even know has to stay in your home. well that's how the patriots felt and that's how I would feel. that is why I would be a patriot.

  28. I would deffinitly be a patriot! What the british are doing is ridiculous. They make laws that do not help anything in the colonies, infact the laws make things worse. If the British wanted to go to war, they should have thought about all the debt they were going to have, and how to pay for the people that are actually serving them. I know that being a patriot does sound diffucult, but they are making things the way they should be. I think it's great that people went on a boat and dumped all of that tea overboard, because all of that tea is rightfully theres, and they should not have to pay the british again! Also think about today, if there were no patriots then just think what the world would be like today! I'm glad that the patriots finally got their way, because they faught for the good!

  29. If I lived in the 13 colonies and had to choose between a Loyalist or a Patriot, I would choose to be a Patriot. Because I wouldn't want to be in charge of making laws and establish taxes in benefit of England or important people and because I am not agree with their ideas (like to paying money to England only just to get tea). Also because I believe that every nation has to be independent and do what ever is best for the country and it's people beliefs so I would fight for democracy. But in the other hand, I think It was very hard for Patriot people to fight for their rights and a better life because on that time the important and rich people had advantage and were more powerful.
