Heroes

We have read in Three Cups of Tea that one of Greg Mortenson's heroes is Mother Teresa because of how she used her life to serve those who were less fortunate than herself. Using this as an example, please answer the following questions:

- What is your definition of a hero?
- Based on your definition, who is one of your heroes?
- Describe the characteristics that make him/her your hero.

  2. Heroes are not people in capes with super powers, but people who make super things happen. A hero is someone who makes the world different, not always better, just different. A hero could be someone like Jane Goodall, or someone like Madonna. I think your dad can be your hero if you wanted him to be. A hero is someone you admire.

My hero would have to be Ginger Rogers. I love tap dancing and I want to be the best tap dancer I can be. She is someone I admire and want to be like with years of practice.

Ginger Rogers is a famous tap dancer from the 1920s. She and her partner Fred Astire are the best dancers I have seen. They are so on beat with the music. It is truly amazing.

  3. A hero is somebody who makes a difference in somebody's life. For Greg, Mother Teresa was his hero because he, like her, wanted poor people to get an education or food. A hero is somebody you look up to, or someone you want to be like.
My hero would be Jerry Rice because no matter what happened to him, he tried his best to be the best that he could be. That is a characteristic that I would look for in a person I would think as a hero.
Jerry Rice was a football player for about 20 years. He played for the San Francisco 49ers for most of his career. Many people, including me, think he is the best football player ever in history.

  4. A hero is someone that a person looks up to. Greg's hero was Mother Teresa. Greg wanted to help children in Pakistan the same way Mother Teresa helped children. A hero is someone that you beleive in.
My heroes are The Beatles. The reason they're my heroes is because I love their popular songs and they were really talented. They were loved by fans around the world. When I grow up, I hope I can be as talented as them.
The Beatles had 4 people in their group. 2 of the Beatles died but that doesn't stop me seeing them as my hero. I still believe in them even if all of them die. I think they were the best singers that ever lived.

  5. A hero is somebody that has changed someone's life in positive ways. A hero does not need to have super powers like Superman to help someone. A hero is a person whom you admire or look up to.

My hero is Bruce Lee. He is famous for his awesome martial arts abilities.

One of my favorite quotes from him is, "Be like water." It means to always try to find a way around an obstacle, things that get in your way to accomplish a goal. He is also very determined in doing his martial art forms perfectly by practicing long hours every day. He is my hero because I want to be able to perform my Tae Kwon Do forms just like him some day and be successful in achieving my goals in life.

  6. A hero is a person that is good on the inside not the outside. Which means they have a big heart, not because of their popularity, or if they are a celebrity. That is my definition of a hero.
My hero is Jesse Owens because of his courageous performance in the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics.
He is my hero because of his courageous victory when he went to the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics. He won 4 gold medals and was the first black person to win a gold medal. It must have been difficult to compete in Nazi Germany. I think he was hardworking, courageous, smart, athletic, and brave to make this astonishing win in the 1936 Summer Olympics. That is why Jesse Owens is my hero.

  7. A hero is a person who helps the world or who is very talented and sets a good example, like a role model. A hero is not someone with superpowers like Batman, Superman or Spiderman. I think a hero is someone who puts other people before him or herself. That is what I think a hero is.

My hero is Brett Favre because he has faced many challenges in his life and has always used them as a learning experience. One of these challenges was when his dad died. Brett made a commitment to himself, his team and his dad, and came out and played one of the best games of his life. Another challenge he faced was when his wife had breast cancer. Every year Brett Favre raises millions of dollars for breast cancer research. He has also used his fame to raise millions of dollars to help underprivileged children. The name of the two foundations are the Brett Favre Forward Foundation and the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation.

A hero is not a hero because he or she is good at sports or a famous actor or actress. A person becomes a hero when he or she does something amazing for someone else and it changes the world in a positive way.

  8. I think that a hero is someone who makes a great change. The change a hero makes doesn't have to be helping the world. It can be helping an indavisual. I think your hero can be anybody you want it to be.

I like many basketball players, but one of my favorites is Sue Bird.

Sue Bird is my hero becasuse she has changed the way I think about the game basketball. She has set many goals in life and I plan to do so as well. She is a point guard and thats what made me work so hard over the summer. Since I worked so hard, I am one of the point guards on my basketball team. One thing I have learned from basketball and Sue Bird is that when you push harder you will work harder and when you work harder you will do better. I hope that Sue Bird can make changes in many young basketball players life.

  9. "Hero"
My definition of a hero is someone that either helps you or teaches you somthing. Like a coach in sports, or a teacher.A hero can also be someone that saves you like a Policeman or a Fireman even an Ambulance Driver.

I have never been in a situation for a Policeman, Ambulance Driver or a Fireman had to come save me. So my hero is my coach/Dad that has been coaching me in basketball since I was 6 and is still coaching me in select.

My dad played college basketball and I look up to him because he knows a lot about this sport.

My hero is J.K. Rowling. She is the writer of all the Harry Potter books.
J.K. Rowling is my hero because the Harry Potter books are some of the best books I've ever read, and I've read a lot books! Because of her, I have been wanting to write books and become a wizard like Harry! J.K. Rowling taught me that anything is possible because when she wrote the first Harry Potter book, she was really poor, but than when she finished the 7th Harry Potter book she was one of the richest people on earth because so many people bought her books! I really love J.K. Rowling!

  12. A hero for me is a person who helps people and wants to help the environment. I have two heroes; my first hero is Angelina Jolie, because she helps poor people in Africa or refugees like the ones in Pakistan. Also she has been working for the United Nations and helped wildlife. My second hero is my mom, because she teaches me how can we help people and the environment. She loves animals and the earth, Even my uncle call her H20 inspector. My mom also has a lot of patience and loves me no matter what.

  13. A hero doesn't always have to be the good guy beating up the bad guy, or having superpowers. It could mean in Greg's case anyway helps less fortunate children get educated in many places. A hero to me is someone who stands up to be a leader and helps others when they are down. (Or less fortunate people) One of my heros is definately got to be my mom. She cooks and cleans and does almost everything in the house. But she can do something that I can't always do, she has perserverence. She has to do so much work everyday and she never gives up, and at the end of the day she is always there for me.

  14. My definition of a hero is somebody who inspires kids to do what they want. A hero helps people discover things that they don’t know they can do. A hero makes kids persevere when they are having a hard time. My hero is one of my old teachers, Mr. Josh. He is my hero because he inspires me. He helps me start doing things that I never thought of doing. He also doesn’t just say do this and that. He helps me do them.
Another reason he is my hero because I really want to be good with kids when I grow up. I also liked Mr. Josh because he is like a big brother. Also, when I am with him, I feel like he really enjoys hanging out with me.

  15. My definition of a hero is a person who makes a difference in someone’s life, or a person to which someone looks up to. A hero is not always a person who is in tights and a cape but it is someone who makes some type of a difference in a persons life.

Some of my heroes are people like my parents. They are heroes because they take care of me by feeding me and buying me clothes and loving me. Also there are many more heroes in my life like God. He is hero for me because God created me and the whole world, he also gave me my parents and sister and brother, too. Mia Hamm is another one of my heroes because I love playing soccer and she is a great soccer player. She has had experience playing promotive woman’s soccer. Also my school teacher is a hero because she teaches me things I need to know to live my life, like math and geography. My friends also help me out by explaining things if I don’t understand them, helping me with projects and most of all making me feel better when I am hurt. Being a hero makes a difference in someone’s life and I think we can be someone’s hero too.

One of my hereos is my dad. He gets money so I can have food and clothing. Also he teaches we what to do and what not to do in life. My dad is one of my role models because he did goood in school but my mom is my other role model. She also did good in school and did advertisment. I would like to work at Microsoft like my dad did though.

  17. Hmmm..... What do I think of as a hero? I think a hero is someone who puts others before themselves and someone who you look up to. Also, I think a hero is a person who makes personal sacrifices for the good of others. A hero, to me, isn't a person wearing a cape and having superpowers, but a person who makes a difference in other people's lives.

Based on my definition of a hero, my hero would be my Grandfather. My Grandfather saved our family and many other people. He wanted a better future for his children, (My mom, and her two younger brothers). They were living in Vietnam at the time and life was terrible there because of the communist government. So my grandfather planned and built a small wooden boat for our family and others to escape Vietnam. He risked his life because if the government found out, they would imprison him. They were extremely lucky because my family landed on Malaysia and lived in refugee camp until they were sponsored to America. It's likely that because of my Grandfather's courage that I am here today.

  18. I think that Mother Teresa was such a good woman.
She was caring, supportive and helpful. My definition would be, helpful, nice, smart and would risk his/her life to help people and who yuo look up to. I would also say someone who is more fortunate but wold want to be less fortunate so the other person wouldn't feel bad and makes a difference in other people's lives. My role model would have to be my mom and because care about and help me whenever and wherever and they're so supportive. That is who my role model, and because of them, I am trying to be just like them because they're heroes.

  23. I think a hero is somebody who does nice things for other people and puts other people before them self. A hero can be a superhero but it can also just be a nice person. That's what I think a hero is.

I think two of my hero's are my uncle and my mom. One of the reasons my uncle is my hero is because he is always nice to me, and does a lot of nice things for me. Another reason is he does lots of work to help and protect the environment.

I think my mom is a hero because she always helps me with all my homework, feeds me, is generous and is always nice. It was hard to pick just two hero's because there are so many good people in the world.

  24. Many people think that a hero is a person with super powers, who saves the world and flies around in blue tights and a red cape, but they're not. A hero is a person that you look up to, and see as a true inspiration. Mother Teresa is Gregg’s hero probably because she is a large inspiration and influence to him.

My hero is my mom. She is my hero because she is very kind and helpful, and always keeps me on the right path. Without her, I would be a much different person, and it wouldn't be for the better. She is my hero.

  25. Lot's of people think that a hero is a person that just does good things. But really a hero is someone that stands up for what is right and thinks of other people then just them. A hero could even be one of your family members.

Based on my definition, my hero is my mom. She will always help me when I am heart and she will always take care of me. She is also my hero because she is the best at making me feel better when I am sick and my mom takes care of other people than just herself! She s the best in the world! I love her!

  28. A hero is someone who helps people and does nice things without asking for anything in return. The person I pick as my hero is my Grandpa. Because he is a very smart papa and answers all the questions that I ask him. He helps me with my sports, softball, golf, fishing, and soccer. He always makes me laugh.

One of my heroes is Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King is one of my heroes because he made black and white friends instead of enemies. He created equality among people. He was able to help free slavery. He stood up for what he believed.
