To Explore or Not to Explore

As you have been researching an explorer for your explorer report, you have learned about what an explorer's life was like hundreds of years ago. Knowing what you know, if you had lived in 16th century Europe, would you have volunteered for a New World exploration voyage?

Please clearly state your answer, along with at least three reasons to explain your answer. Be specific with information you have learned about New World exploration. Remember to include an introduction sentence AND a conclusion sentence.

  1. If I was Henry Hudson I wouldn't have went exploring. I'm a kind of person who doesn't like to be risky, so if I was a person living then I would want to be safe because many people didn't come home (like my explorer). Also there were rumors about the world being flat and that if you sailed to far that you would drop of the world and get eaten by sea monsters and because I wouldn't have the knowledge I have today I probably would have believed it. I'm not greedy like other people so I would have stayed home because I would have been to scared. As I told you I think that I wouldn't have went exploring.

  2. If I was John Cabot I would still have gone exploring beacause I think it would be fun but challenging to sail around the world at diffrent trading posts. But the only thing that is holding me back is the taking a chance part.John Cabot never returned to Europe. I would have liked sailing in the 16th centry.

  3. If I were living in the 16th century, I would not want to go out and explore.
My first reason is because if I go exploring, I will not be able to see or talk to my family. Back then, they did not have telephones or radios for communication.

My second reason is because when you go to the New World, you might encounter with Natives whom might ambush you and kill you.

My third and final reason why I would not want to go out and explore is because I don’t want to end up like Vasaco de nunez de Balboa who was betrayed and beheaded by people whom he thought he could trust.

As you can see, it would not be fun for me if I were an explorer because I would not be able to see my family or I might get killed by the Natives or people whom I trusted.

  4. If it were the 16th century i would not like to go on a voyage to the new world. If i went on the voyage then i would not get to see or talk to my family, they would sit there wondering every night whether i would come back or not. The second reason is that i am not a greedy person and i do not want to rob innocent people for fame and gold etc.. Also back then they did not know that the world was round, everyone thought that if you went far enough you would fall off the edge of the world and then get eaten by sea monsters. Every minute I'm away from my family I would cringe, I love them so much that I couldn't stay away from them for a day. Even though that we fight a lot i would not like to risk my life on exploring because I would miss them too much. Like what MLK Jr. said, "The quality, not the longevity of ones life is what is important." If i were to go on an exploration there is a higher possibility opf dying and it would not be a very good life.

  5. I think that the explorers had very hard lifes when they went on voyages, and if I was living back then I would not want to be an explorer. The first reason I would not like to be an explorer is becuase before you even go on your voyage you have to convince some king or Queen that they should buy all your supplies. Second, back then the explorers had very little idea that they were on course, and were they landed (christopher Colombus). Last, there voyages were very rough and alot of people died, or they had to live on the rats in the hold. I have made this decision because most explorers are excited, but when they actually set sail they wish that they had never come.

  6. I was Christopher Columbus and I would have gone exploring, it would be fun but extremely challenging.

The first reason I would do this because you would have a possibility of getting gold, spices, and other foreign goods. once returning to the country you are sailing for you will get much fame, and make your King and Queen happy.

Secondly I would explore because if your were patriotic you would sail to gain land, slaves, and goods. Once returning to your country your King and Queen will be proud of making your country powerful.

Lastly I would explore because you would gain much land exploring. Once returning from your voyage, you may bring back more citizens. Also build colonization.

Those are three reasons why I would explore in the Age of Exploration.

  7. If I lived in the Age of Exploration, I would and wouldn't go exploring. It would be a big risk, but a wonderful experience.

I would go exploring because I would be famous in my country, I would be a hero for my country and I would find goods and land. I would also be a patriot in my country as well. I would get to meet the Queen and King and make them happy. I would get a lot of riches to support my family with.

I wouldn't go exploring because I would have to live through storms, mutiny, and hard days of labor. I would be risking my life and I would be taking a HUGE challenge. I would need to be brave. I also wouldn't want to leave my family, friends and country for so long with only notes and letters that may not even reach where I live. I wouldn't go because of the major disasters that could happen to me and my crew. Going sailing would be a very big challenge and risk!

I would say the 60% of me would want to not go sailing and that 40% of me would go sailing.

Thats my thinking on how I would live in the Age of Exploration!

  8. I would not want to be an explorer in the Age of Exploration. I have many reasons but the most important are:
First of all, almost half of the explorers never made it back home. In the 1600s, the probability of surviving a sea journey was low because the maps and instruments were not as sophisticated or precise as they are now. I would be willing to go exploring if the chances of survival were higher. There was a good chance for natives to attack explorers when they reached foreign lands, and for sailors, to become mutinous and rebel against their captain. The explorer I chose was Robert La Salle, and his men were so angry with him that they murdered him. That is the kind of danger explorers had to endure.
Second, explorers brought diseases to the natives that killed many and vice versa. If I were an explorer, I wouldn’t want to cause their and my own death. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. Did the explorers not realize that they were killing people, as well as themselves? Why did they keep going back? If explorers let the natives be, thousands, maybe millions of people would have had longer lives.
Lastly, what about my family? Would they just wait for news, always thinking about the possibility of my death? The more I research it, the more I realize how much pain and suffering explorers made happen. It’s just sad to think about those families that were waiting for their family member to come home but they never did.
These are my reasons for not wanting to go exploring in the 1600’s.

  9. If I were living in the 16th century I would have not under any sercumstances would go exploring!

1st. I hate, HATE the ocean, I am more of a land person. I hate the way the sea rocks beneeth your feet, if I went on a voyage, I don't think I could stand being on a ship for an infamite length of time.

2nd. I'm a girl and girls didn't explore back then.

3rd. I owuldn't want to leave my family.

These are the resons I would not be an explorer.

  10. Life has different challenges and opportunities depending in which country and time on life do you live. If I had lived in the 16th century I would be an explorer because I like adventure even when it was risky to live in a boat, and get sick, lost, or attacked by pirates without telephones or radios to ask for help. Another reason would be get fame and respect. I think it was like to be a president, or a very important executive on this time. And the last reason would be to meet new people, discover animals like the manatees and parrots in Pedro's Journal and places just like the beaches in Dominican Republic and Cancun.

I think the hardest part of being a explorer in the 16th century was to disagree with others looking for new places and choose a way to follow. Also be afraid of not coming back and not seeing your family again, but anything in life is easy even when you are lucky.

  11. If I had lived in the 16th century I would have been happy to go on a New World voyage. There are many reasons I would have gone on the voyage.

The main reason I would have gone on the voyage is because the people of Spain needed help from the war with Portugal and I would have died trying to help them. Spain was fiercely trying to defend themselves from Portugal.

The second reason is I would have liked to have seen the wonders of the New World like the Spice Rich islands, the place that Ferdinand Magellan died trying to see.

The last reason is is that I would have liked to have fame, fortune and to be remembered forever.

I would have liked to have been an explorer in the 16th century so I could spend time with the sea, help with the war and have an experience of finding riches and achieving glory!

  12. If I was john Cabot I would have gone to the new world. The reason I would go is for power and money. Another reason is because I could learn a new language. And I would also be able to see what it is like at the new world. That is why I would have gone to the New World in 16th century.

  13. If I was an explorer back then I would not go exploring the new world. The reason I wouldn't go would be because I would be afraid that I wouldn't make it back home. Another reason is that I get sea sick real easy, and the last reason is even if I wanted to go exploring the new world I couldn't, because girls can't explore. Even if someone would try to persuade me to do it, I wouldn't. This is why I wouldn't go to the new world.

  14. If I were a person in the 16 century I would have gone exploring. Heres why. I really like the water. I don't know why, i just do. I like the seabirds and the fish and stuff. I also really like exploring. I've never been exploring on a ship or anything, but I've explored and even made a little map of our naberhood. I would also go becouse it could mean lots of money and power. It was very dangerous sailing back then, but really, what fun is it if there is no risk?

  15. I would kind of like to be a explorer. I might not want to be a explorer because I have heard about a lot of explorers that have died at sea. But I would want to be an explorer because I would like to get stuff for my country and it would be fun. I would kind of want to explore more though. One, I would have loved to be the one that found all this new land. Two, it would be the adventure of a life time. Last, but not least, I would love to just sail around the oceans and find foreign goods. I wonder what our world would be like if there were never any explorers?

  18. Knowing what I now know about the 16th century Exploration Voyages, I would be the first in line to be Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s assistant, and WOULD most certainly go sailing to the New World. Riches, treasures, spices, silk, slaves, and much, much more! My reasons for sailing to the New World, you ask?

There is a possibility of getting treasures that you may find. These include: gold, silk, spices, tobacco, slaves, and fruits and vegetables. You also may find islands or lands along the way of your voyage, which, if unclaimed, you may claim for your country.

Also, supposing you come back alive, you could bring back gold and other treasures to your king and queen, and if they are satisfied, perhaps they will reward you. Your country will be very powerful because of all the land our have claimed for your country and all the slaves you have taken back with you.

When the word has spread that you have returned and have claimed land, you will be treated as a hero. You will be incredibly famous. You will be named, “ The man who discovered _________.” Or “The discoverer of _________.” Your name will be everywhere!

You may bring people to the land you have discovered. You will start a colony, making yourself the ruler! It will all be yours!

It’s true, all the gold and glory may seem alluring, but deep down inside, at the end of the day, the one thing I really sailed for, was the sea. The calling of the waves, the adventure. My love and passion for sailing. This is really why I want to explore.

Sailing to the New World would be dangerous. But I’d be willing to take the risk for these reasons!

  19. I would not have volunteered for a New World expedition because back in the time of exploration they didn’t know at tone about the world. SO my first reason is I would feel very nervous. I wouldn’t want to sacrifice my life for my country. The second reason is you would have to tell the king and queen why you would be right for the job and not having any experience I probably wouldn’t get picked anyway. The third reason is that how would you feel if someone in your family went away on an exploration and you didn’t know if they were coming back or not. How would you feel? I would be worried sick so I don’t want to put my family in that situation. So these are three reasons why I would not want to go on a New World exploration.

  20. It would be cool if I was an explorer because you get to be known for what you've discovered but if I had a family that was important to me, then I wouldn't explore. Here are a couple of reasons why I wouldn't: I wouldn't because most of the explorers don't come back because of the weather and the native americans fight when you take their land and treat them as slaves. It would also be very dangerous and the captain can't even trust his own crew. If you make a wrong decision you could have serious punishment like Robert La Salle and his crew. The crew murdered him for making the wrong decision. That is the kind of dangerous things that could happen. You also have to remember, we wouldn't know about America if there were no explorers. I am glad for explorers but I just wouldn't want to risk death out at sea.

  21. If I lived inthe 16th centery I would not want to explore because
they didnt have much maps so I might not know where I'm going
I might die on my voyage
I dont have the money to buy a ship

  22. As Hernando De Soto , one reason I would go volunteer to go on a voyage to the New World is because of wealth. Hernando De Soto's family was very poor, and finding gold and riches would help his family out a lot. Another reason I would embark on this voyage is because I would find new ways to get to the New World , so then I could also draw and sell the maps for a lot of money. Even though it would be dangerous , I think I would do it because I would know that exploration is very important to expanding and improving the country I am representing. In conclusion , explorers were vital for the expansion and survival of many countries in the 16th century, without them the United States might not exist.

  23. Knowing what I know now, I would definitely have explored. Juan Ponce de Leon was a great explorer who explored the Florida coast, and claimed a lot of land for Spain. He was a very brave and smart explorer, and for a long time, a very successful Senator in the New World. His discovery of Florida would forever change the way that history had played out throughout the centuries. If I was similar to Juan Ponce de Leon, then I would surely have explored the New World. I would explore because there is a possibility that I could make wonderful discoveries that would change the world forever. To conclude, these are the reasons that I would surely have explored.

  24. I think it would be hard to make a decision of exploring or not because there is good and bad for both. The reasons I would chose to be an explorer would be that I could become rich and famous by finding land gold silk and other things that were precious in the fifteen and sixteen hundreds. Another thing that could happen is I could make my country more powerful. some of the things that could be bad about exploring is that I could die. Many people die while exploring. There is millions of ways to die at sea and if I had to make a choice, I would not explore because I like my life and I don't think I want to lose it.

  25. if I lived in the 16th century, I think I would of loved and disliked it but in different ways. knowing what I know, I would sign up for the New World expedition. I know it was hard sometimes to get all of the supplies you needed but i think I could survive. being in the 16th century is hard enough and have to go on an expedition would be very tough. Even though it would be tough I know I would never give up to complete the trip to the New World. It would also be hard because of my family and what I know with what my explorer went through. I would miss my family so much. I would never give up because I know I would want to walk off of that ship proud and happy!

  26. If I had lived in the 16th century, I would have explored. Some of the reasons that I would have explored are:
    1. I love going to new places
    2. It would be very cool to explore something that no one else has
    3. If I did reach the place that I was going, it would be amazing to become so famous
    4. Also, I could be remember for my voyage hundreds of years later.
I also think that I might have disliked it because you could be blow of course, you could never find the place you were going, and you could starve. Even through the hardship, I would have loved to explore.
